My New Year's Resolution, Y'all
Reacquaint myself with country music

Yup, it's that simple.

While the local country station is still pre-set in the car, I lost interest after the Dixie Chick incident, which came just months before my mom's death. When my mom died, my desire to listen to country music died too.

I grew up on country music. Singing cheating & drinking songs in the back of the VW bug was my life. David Frizzle & Dottie West's tape was on constantly, especially on road trips. Yes, lil Roni could sing both "You're the reason God Made Oklahoma" and "Jose Cuervo" by heart. So listening to country music just hurt too damn much. Somehow the Chicks weren't the same. Maybe because I felt like I found them and introduced my mom. It was my music that she also loved. Everything else was pretty much hers.

This past trip to NC was rough. It marked five years since the last time I really saw my mom. Finishing that thought it too hard...

I talked to Ella a lot about the five year mark. That five years ago she was just a tiny sprout in my belly, yanking on our umbilical cord for more pancakes & crab Rangoon, and how happy her late-Grandma was knowing Ella was on her way. I've made a lot of progress in that area...Talking to Ella about her grandma. And you know what?

She loves it. The other day she was playing phone and she said to me, "It's your mom." I replied as I usually do, "It can't be, sweetie." She gave me her trademark smirk and said, "Mom, heaven's calling!" She immediately assessed my amusement with my stunned look and said, "I mean, it's Kevin calling!"

Tonight after we put away the Christmas decorations I found what I believe is the last family portrait of my parents & us girls. I showed it to Ella and for the first time she identified 'that lady' as her grandma.

Five years is a good time to mourn. Not that it's stopping...goodness no, but I need to start taking back parts of my lost life. And oddly at this point in my life, that means country music. "The music of pain." - Xander Harris.

I know I still can't listen to George Strait, so I still listen with one finger on the "next station" button, but I'm trying.

So...anyone reading this know of any new country acts I should be listening to? My Dixie Chicks Pandora station plays a lot of the same songs. Maybe I've thumbs-up'd too many songs! ha!

Thanks.

What would be on your playlist?
Tomorrow at 2 pm I go in to get my lone wisdom tooth removed.

I'm not going under - I hate the thought of it. So I'm having lots of drugs and bringing the hubby's iPod to drown out the sounds of the dentist ripping my mouth open.

So what would you bring? A playlist of relaxing music? When I had my root canal about 7-8 years ago, the dentist had some great jazz music in the background plus his voice was so monotone & soothing, I almost slept thru the procedure. Or is a kicking ass playlist in order? Loud, heart thumping, fuck-you music?

I think I'm going with the soothing, slightly depressing playlist. If I need a kick in the ass, I figure I can flip playlists, right? There's one playlist called ClubHubby...that's gotta be good. And there's also Old School hubby...I'll feel like I'm back in high school, without all the slutty connotations. ha!

So to the 2 people still reading this baby, wish me luck.

BTW - regular posting will resume in the next week or two as my other gig wraps up. And thanks for keeping me on your RSS feeds.

I'd share the playlist with you so you can laugh at my music tastes, but I can't figure out how to copy & paste it here. And I'm so not typing it all for ya. I love yas, but there's a line.

How was I going to read you all?!? Then I calmed down and thought that a 3 day detox was in order. And ya know what? YOU ALL BLOG TOO MUCH!

WE'RE GOING!!!!!!!

To see the Police at Wrigley Field on July 5th!

The hubby called me at work 15 minutes after I had attempted to go in and realized that yes, you do have to pay the $100 fan club membership just to TRY for tickets. I caved. I thought, "I can't do this. Oh, well. It's ok."

I was literally speechless. I kept answering all of the hubby's questions with, "Oh...my...gawd..." and a few "I love you!!!!"

So who wants to babysit that night? Damn, it's gonna be hard to find out with it being a holiday weekend and all. I gotta ask the babysitter tomorrow morning.

How did this happen?
Someone must devise somesort of punishment for me. And for Pandora.

So I'm working diligenting and decided that my office was way too quiet. I put on Pandora, jam to a few good tunes and then all of a sudden, I'm like "Hmmm...that's new. Good for you Pandora! Is that Gwen Stefani?"

I wish it was her "Girl Power, but I'm not a feminist" bad ass self.

It was...*gulp*...*whisper*Paris. Yes. That Paris.

I am so full of shame. Someone get me an Ani CD quick!

update at 9:30 PM: The hubby likes to tease that you can take the girl outta the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto outta the girl. I get in the car, put on the iPod and what pops up? Wham. Two extended remixes. Then a nice song comes on and I skip it until I get to "Bust A Move." My only excuse is that it was 75 degrees outside, I was driving with the windows down, and I wanted to dance. You can't jam out to Dar & Ani...as much as I love 'em, sometimes you need to go old school and that means going back to my roots vatos. OK, I have to double up on the Hail Anis right? (BTW - The station I was listening to at work & right now on Pandora is Gorillaz Radio. So that's not too ghetto, right?)

Gophering
Egads!

I know life is busy when I don't even have time to blog about the stupid stuff that makes up life. So here's a quick post, just so all of ya who do visit have something new to read.

* Brit: tsk, tsk...what else is there to say? Other than the latest piece I read on her had some doc suggeting that she was suffering from post-partum depression. Maybe Brooke Shields needs to visit her. Not to sound like the cold hearted bitch some of you think I am, but Brit seems to suffer what every other star does. That they are the pay check for almost everyone else. Her mom, her sister, her best buds, etc. Are they really going to tell her to quick acting like an idiot and shape up? Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that every momma should go out once a week and dance it up. But every night?

* Tick...tock: Less than a week until the city elections. How bad will Da Mayor trounce Dorothy Brown? *sigh* If the media had given her race half a chance, it might had been a good race. And I won't mention the 4-person race in my ward...mostly because I mention it to voters almost every night for 2 hours.

* I use to feel a tad sad that I never lived in the dorms when I was in college. I don't anymore. 'nuff said.

* There's your trouble: Ella's still stuck on the Dixie Chicks. So much so that even I tell her that it's been enough. Funny thing is that because of the embargo against the Chicks, we've been listening to WLUW. I've been a member for a few years and the hubby has pretty much laughed. Of course that has all changed. He's digging the station. Of course, I usually listen during the talk shows. He's a music man. BTW - They are in a pledge drive right now. Support community radio!

* Starting March 1st, things might get a tad quiet around here. I have a new blogging gig. No, I'm not telling. Unless you email me.

* I took the advise given and printed out the calls last week. I was able to write up one abstract that is due March 1st. Now to type it up (yes, I still write, write...as in a pen & notebook) and send it in! Yay for peer pressure!!

* I really need to get our taxes done like today. Hopefully by the end of the weekend. Normally they are done by now, but that's how busy life has become!

* I've been asked to reapply for that leadership program I got rejected by last spring. At first I thought, no. I feel I've evolved past the point that this leadership program can do for me. As you may or may not know, most leadership programs want you to pay them back...Since this is a political one and I don't fall in line, well, you see my quandry. Then I talked to someone else who I thought might have gone thru it or knew others who had and she said she didn't think SHE had enough experience last year. Hmmm...But said that people like us would benefit from it. I guess I'll think about it.

* I got an ingenuiTEA mug like Cinnamon's after seeing her photos. I had just bought their lil tea pot, but quickly realized that I needed the mug for work instead. I LOVE IT! Other than cleaning it out. There's a reason we decided to put tea in bags. If you are going to buy anything from them, email me first! I can send you a gift certificate. (Thanks to Amy & Cinnamon for sending me GCs!)

Dixie Chicks on Democracy Now!
My obsession is clear. It is also rubbing off on Ella. All she has wanted to listen to for the past week is the Dixie Chicks. Gotta say it is comforting to hear my 3yo singing along to "Truth No. 2" on the way to pre-school or for her to throw in "my high school friends" in random conversation.

This morning Amy Goodman speaks with Barbara Kopple, Director of “Shut Up & Sing”. It's a great interview and of course, they cheer the Chicks kicking ass at the Grammy's on Sunday night. They, of course, also discuss censorship & radio monopoly.

The hubby let me know that "Not Ready to Make Nice" was #1 on iTunes Tuesday. Gotta love that. Now to wait for "Shut Up & Sing" to come out on DVD.

Heh-Heh

Nelson does sum it up best.

I was crying last night after they won the 4th award. This morning on NPR they did a piece on the Chicks and I almost cried again. It's just so wonderful to see the Chicks get vindication. I switched to our country station for a bit, but I didn't hear anything about them.

Of course, after Ella saw them on the show last night, she wanted more. We told her that they only played one song. Then she wanted to watch her Dixie Chicks DVDs. It's hard having such a #1 fan in the house who doesn't understand that we need to watch the show so we can see our grrls win award after award.
