It was already hard enough trying to figure out if I should throw my weight behind Hillary's expected run for the White House. Now we have added in Barak. Obviously neither candidate is perfect, so what's a feminist to do?
As we all know, us feminists get grilled almost everywhere we go and thus any candidate we support, we better be ready to acknowledge their faults and 'excuse' them.
I already kinda blogged about
Hillary, but Barak is a different story. While I do call him our President to Ella, he's had some trouble with the
progressive community as well. I fondly remember standing and cheering as he booed the pending Iraq War. OK, so he does want a phased pull-out. But he's never waived on his non-support of marriage equality. He lawyers his way thru any discussion of providing Social Security benefits to same sex couples. Believe me, I've seen it in person.
While one might have issues with the institution of marriage, if you are partnered with someone and you two are living & supporting each other, I want you to be able to inherit from each other and that includes Social Security.
Damn...I'll have to revisit this as I need to go wake up Ella now. Until then, read Gloria Steinem's excellent piece in
Alternet.
