More and more women are being profiled in this war. It's really weird to me. On one hand, I think it's sending a message that women can be on the front lines of a war and OTOH, stories about PCF Lynch seem to really focus on her femininity. But even that's not that terrible. I'm far from the lil feminist I was in grade school who refused to wear dresses or anything pink for fear that someone wouldn't take me seriously as a non-girly girl. In fact, I think it's pretty neat to see women who are stereotypically pretty and can kick some major ass in this war.
I do fear that it might be taken too far. Once the war is over will Hugh & his herd of bunnies be knocking on PFC Lynch's door? Will we never see or hear of
Army Spc. Shoshana Johnson again? And with all the hoopla over the greatness that women accomplished, will the fact that PFC Lynch & Johnson could have been
raped be passed over for snazzy looking magazine covers & made-for-TV-movies? The fear of rape isn't just for our fighting girls, but also for the Iraqi women.
I know I kinda babbled, but women in the military isn't just about rah-rahing them as they bomb the shit outta a country nor is it smiling pretty for the camera. It actually could be both and then some. It'll be interesting to sit back and watch how all of this unfolds. All I do know is that from here on out, there's no turning back for women in the military. We've let them fly combat missions, we can't ground them using ancient stereotypes. Althou I oppose war, I do support my boys & girls in uniform. I do hope we can bring them all home soon & safely.
